What is an Open Access Network?

Real Broadband™ has taken a dramatic leap from “optional tool” or even “luxury” to “critical utility” in any competitive society.

Networks designed and operated by Axia are “Open Access Networks”. We use this name because they are open to use by all.  Axia believes that access to high-speed broadband should not be limited to a select few, but should be equally available to everyone, from individual homes in a rural setting to major corporations in the heart of an urban centre.  All organizations, companies and individuals benefit from high quality, high capacity, cost effective connectivity, no matter where they live or work.

Applications layered over broadband networks are driving leading economies, not only in the business arena, but also for best societal development, whether, for example, through enhanced education approaches or more dedicated healthcare delivery.  To enable and foster these solutions, broadband must be available on an Open Access basis – equally accessible by every sector – residential, business and industry; central and rural; wealthy and low-income.

Broadband as infrastructure

  • Knowledge exchange
Around the globe, governments are recognizing that availability of broadband is crucial to the long-term strength of their economies.  Much as railways and roads were recognized as critical infrastructure in the previous century, broadband is the foundation for the new economies of this century, bridging the Digital Divide, facilitating social inclusion and driving future economic prosperity.
  • IP for global interoperability
Internet Protocol (IP) based connectivity, when widely available to the population, will lead to increased standards of living and fuel the development of knowledge economies in social development.  Network capacity and quality enables applications that were previously unavailable in non-metro regions – for example Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP), videoconferencing, teleworking and high capacity data transfer.
